SU Pitchers Shut Down UTPB for Doubleheader
Sweep
Sophomore
Chris Armijo and freshman Colton Hermes each
pitched complete game wins as Schreiner got
several key hits to complete a doubleheader
sweep of UT-Permian Basin.
In game one, three SU sophomores (Johnny Huizar,
Richard Sanchez and Ray Martinez) and one senior
(Jeremiah Kester), each had two hits.
Martinez had three RBI in the game and five on
the day. Their offense proved to be more
than enough to complement Armijo's pitching gem.
Armijo (1-0) allowed only one run and six hits
in seven innings as the Mountaineers (2-0)
cruised to a 7-1 victory.
In the second
game, UTPB (0-2) got on the board first in the
top of the first inning to grab a 1-0 lead.
It didn't take long for SU and senior Chase
Kimball to answer back in a big way. In
the bottom of the second inning, Kimball blasted
a grand slam over the left field wall to put SU
ahead to stay. The Falcons rallied to
within 5-4 after the top of the third inning but
Schreiner hung a seven run inning on the Falcons
and went on to win, 12-4, to complete the sweep.
Kimball's hit
(and 4 RBI) was the big blow but SU spread its
offense around among seven players. Kester
and Rene Muniz each had two RBI in the second
game to go with Martinez. Hermes (1-0)
went the full seven innings in his collegiate
debut, giving up three earned runs on eight
hits. The two SU pitchers allowed only 4
walks in 14 innings of work while striking out
12. UTPB is in its first year as a
scholarship NCAA Division II program.
