SU Baseball Drops Three Games in Opening Weekend
Schreiner committed a total of 14 errors in
three games which resulted in 12 unearned runs
as the Mountaineers lost all three games in
their opening weekend of the 2008 season.
SU dropped its opener, 15-8, against Eastern New
Mexico. Schreiner held an 8-6 lead
entering the 8th inning, but gave up 9 unearned
runs to allow the comeback. Sophomore Eric
Wehmeyer (0-1) took the loss despite not giving
up an earned run in 1-2/3 innings of relief.
In the second game, Schreiner lost a hard-luck
pitching duel to fellow-ASC team Howard Payne in
a non-league contest, 2-1. Senior starting
pitcher Kevin Jones gave up just one run while
scattering six hits over six innings.
Senior Bernard Pena (0-1) pitched two innings of
relief, and only gave up two hits, but gave up
the decisive run in the bottom of the ninth.
Both games were played in Midland on a neutral
site.
In the weekend's finale, Schreiner moved over to
Odessa to play at NCAA Division II UT-Permian
Basin. UTPB scored three runs in both the
third and fifth innings and then another six in
the sixth to blow open the contest. Junior
Chris Armijo (0-1) took the loss, allowing four
earned runs in four innings of work.
Offensively, junior Johnny Huizar had a team
high five hits in nine at bats (.555).
Sophomore Eric Crenwelge, junior Ray Martinez
and seniors Matt Langston and Richard Sanchez
all had three hits during the weekend.
Langston had three of the team's 8 RBI. |
