Jones Pitches Gem, Bats Erupt as SU Earns Split
Senior starting pitcher Kevin Jones, combined
with a potent Schreiner offense, earned a 9-2
win and split of their doubleheader at
Southwestern. Jones (1-0) threw five
shutout innings to earn his first win of the
year. The Mountaineer bats came to life
with 14 hits, led sophomores Eric Crenwelge and
J.D. Escobar who each had three hits.
SU (1-4) lost the opening game, 14-0, and could
only manage two hits against three Pirate (1-2)
pitchers. Sophomore Colton Hermes (0-1)
took the loss.
Schreiner took the lead, 1-0, in the third
inning and added two runs in both the fifth and
seventh innings to extend the lead to 5-0.
After Southwestern plated two runs in their half
of the seventh to make it 5-2, Schreiner
answered back with four more runs in the top of
the eighth. The final run came at a cost
though, for the Mountaineers. Sophomore
Matt Tomasello, who has been one of SU's top
offensive players so far this season, likely was
lost for the season when he was injured sliding
into home plate while scoring the game's final
run.
Freshman Michael Houser continued his strong
early season with 1-1/3 innings of scoreless
relief of Jones. Tomasello and junior
Richard Sanchez each had two RBI for the
Mountaineers who open their home and ASC seasons
this weekend with a series with Ozarks. |
