Schreiner Wins 1-of-3 Games in Series with HPU
Schreiner opened ASC West divisional play with a
split of their first two games of a three-game
series in Kerrville but dropped the finale, 5-3. Howard Payne (2-1)
won the first game, 15-12, and Schreiner came
back on Saturday to win the first game of the
doubleheader 10-5.
The Mountaineers (1-2 in ASC West) started fast
on Friday, taking a 6-1 lead through three
innings. The Yellow Jackets came roaring
back in the middle innings, to score all 15 runs
off three SU pitchers. Trailing 15-11,
Schreiner had plenty of chances to get back into
the game. The Mountaineers left the bases
loaded in both the eighth and ninth innings.
Sophomore Eric Wehmeyer took the loss in relief
of junior Chris Armijo.
In Saturday's first game, again Schreiner
started out on top. SU scored three in the
first inning and another run in the second, but
HPU rebounded to score 5 (four earned) against
sophomore starter Colton Hermes (1-3) to take a
brief lead. The Mountaineers answered back
in the bottom of the inning to tie the score and
then added five more runs in the next two
innings and Hermes was solid the rest of the way
for the complete game win.
Junior Richard Sanchez led the SU attack on
Saturday, going 3-for-3 with an RBI and run
scored. Freshman Oscar Ibieta added two
RBI. Ibieta was coming off a 4-RBI effort
on Friday night while senior Matt Langston
scored three times for Schreiner.
Schreiner was aided by 5 HPU errors in the
second contest.
In the series finale, Howard Payne reach SU
senior starter Kevin Jones (1-3) for two runs in
the second inning. HPU was stymied for the
next five innings by Jones who pitched another
solid game. Schreiner finale was able to
get on the board in the 7th inning with three
runs to take the lead. The Yellow Jackets
rallied against Jones to tie the score in the
eighth and loaded the bases with no one out.
Junior reliever A.J. Mann came in to replace
Jones and struck out the first batter he faced.
It looked like SU might escape the inning but
two infield errors led to two runs and the
Mountaineers could not rally. |
