Baseball Scores 25 Runs in Sweep of Cardinal
Stritch
Schreiner scored 25 runs in a doubleheader sweep
of visiting Cardinal Stritch on Tuesday.
The Mountaineers (6-15, 3-3 in ASC) won the
opener 9-8 and then built up a big early lead in
a 16-7 win in the nightcap.
SU scored three runs in their first at bat in
game #1 but unearned runs led to Cardinal
Stritch's comeback. Freshman starter
Brandon Pape gave up only two earned runs but
couldn't get past the fourth inning. When
he left, he still held a 6-5 lead. The
visitors scored two runs in the sixth to take a
one-run lead but Schreiner got two of its own in
the bottom of the inning. Cardinal Stritch
again tied the game in the top of the seventh,
but the Mountaineers got the game winner in the
bottom of the seventh on senior Matt Langston's
RBI single. Freshman Oscar Ibieta drove in
three runs and had a triple that drove in two
runs that got SU started in the first inning.
Senior Bernard Pena got the win in relief.
In the second game, Schreiner scored early and
often in a game that saw them pound 16 runs on
16 hits. SU scored at least one run in
every inning it came to bat. The
Mountaineers scored one in the first inning, two
in the second, three in the third and then four
in the fourth to end all doubt in the contest.
Langston had four hits in five at-bats, drove in
two runs and scored three. Junior Juan
Gonzalez had three hits and drove in four runs.
Freshman Michael Nicholson went six innings to
get the victory.
The Mountaineers, after starting the season
slowly, have won four of their last five games
and five of their last seven - including
starting the ASC season with a 3-3 record. |
