Hardin-Simmons' Pitchers Dominant in 6-2 Win
Hardin-Simmons' James Sweatman and Kyle Barton
pounded the strike zone all game long as the
Cowboys won 6-2 in the first game of their
three-game series.
Sweatman went 7-1/3 innings, scattered six hits
and didn't allow an earned run. Barton was
nearly as dominant but both pitchers got out of
one small jam each.
HSU (12-8, 3-4 in ASC) took an early 4-0 lead
off SU sophomore starting pitcher Colton Hermes.
Hermes (2-4) scrambled through six innings of
work but was hit hard early.
Hardin-Simmons reached him for 14 hits during
his outing, most of those coming in the first
three innings. Still, Hermes managed to
keep the game close.
When Schreiner
scratched out two runs in the fifth, the
Mountaineers (6-17, 3-4 in ASC) had life but
Sweatman and Barton were just two tough.
They were consistently ahead in the count early
and forced Schreiner to hit their pitches.
HSU added two insurance runs in the latter
innings off Hermes and two SU relievers.
Sophomore Eric Crenwelge, junior A.J. Mann and
sophomore J.D. Escobar each had two hits to pace
SU.
