Three SU Pitchers Handcuff HSU in DH Sweep
Three Schreiner
pitchers held Hardin-Simmons to only five hits
as SU won by 4-3 and 4-1 counts in a
doubleheader sweep. It still took extra
innings for the Mountaineers (5-4 in ASC) to win
the first game, and again, it was a pitcher who
did the hitting damage.
Junior reliever A.J. Mann threw three innings of
one-hit relief but SU still was tied with HSU
(3-6 in ASC), 3-3, in the bottom of the tenth.
Mann led off the inning with a walk-off home
run. For his efforts, he also picked up
the win (1-1) as well.
Senior starter Kevin Jones (3-2) was even
better, throwing a complete game one-hitter as
Schreiner won the second game, 4-1.
Hardin-Simmons reached SU junior starter Chris
Armijo for three runs over his first three
innings of work. The Cowboys took
advantage of four walks in the second and third
innings and turned them into a 3-0 lead.
Schreiner hitters turned the tables in the
bottom of the sixth, scoring three times on
walks, an RBI by junior Ray Martinez and a
two-RBI single by sophomore Eric Crenwelge to
tie the score. Schreiner looked to grab
the lead later in the inning, having runners on
second and third with nobody out, when the
Cowboys made a pitching change. Josh
Alcorn struck out three SU batters to get out of
the jam with the score tied 3-3. Armijo
pitched seven innings, giving up just three
hits. Mann was nearly perfect in relief
and his blast over the left field fence ended
the contest three innings later.
Jones also had some early trouble with walks
which led to HSU grabbing a short-lived 1-0 lead
in the second. In the bottom of the
inning, Schreiner strung hits together to load
the bases. Junior Johnny Huizar cleared
them with a double (3 RBI) to give SU and Jones
a 3-1 lead it wouldn't relinquish.
The Mountaineers added an insurance run in the
fifth thanks to senior Matt Langston's hustle.
He hit a single and then stole both second and
third base and then scored on a wild pitch.
That was more than enough offense for Jones, who
went seven innings, allowing only one hit and
striking out four.
Schreiner has now won six of its last eight
games and seven of its last 10.
