Jones Shines Again; SU Gains Split with #17 UMHB
Senior right hander Kevin Jones again was
dominant, throwing a complete game win vs.
17th-ranked UMHB to earn a split. Jones
went 9 innings, scattering five hits, giving up
only one earned run in the 10-2 win.
Earlier in the day, a disputed call in the top of the seventh went
against Schreiner and UMHB took advantage to
score six runs and win 14-6.
Jones (4-3) was strong throughout and carried a
shutout into the eight inning but gave up an
unearned run to cut his lead to 9-1.
Schreiner (6-9 in ASC) scored seven runs in the
fourth inning to give Jones more than enough
support. Junior Oliver Stogsdill and
Richard Sanchez each had three hits.
Stogsdill drove in three runs while Sanchez
plated two.
In the first game, the disputed call played a
big part in the outcome. With the score
tied 8-8, it appeared that Schreiner had the
final out when junior first baseman Stogsdill
tagged the runner going to first base. The
base umpire saw otherwise allowing the inning to
continue. 17th-ranked UMHB (11-4 in ASC) took advantage
of the opportunity and strung together a series
of hits to score six runs and break the tie.
Schreiner could not mount a challenge in the
bottom of the inning and fell, 14-8.
Schreiner rallied for two runs in the fourth to
tie the game, 2-2. UMHB knocked out
starter Colton Hermes in the fifth and scored
five times but SU came right back with six runs,
helped by Crusader errors, in the bottom of the
inning to lead, 8-7.
After the Cru evened the game in the sixth, that
set up the game-changing final sequence.
Sophomores Eric Crenwelge, J.D. Escobar and Joe
Andrew Pena all had two hits to lead SU's
offense.
