Schreiner Wins First Game with Sixth Inning Rally, Drops Second

Photo:  Freshman Roger Chavez is congratulated by teammates after his two-out hit scored two runs to put SU up 5-0 in the first inning.

Senior Ray Martinez started a four run sixth inning rally with a hit that scored three runs and then came home on a balk to score the winning run as SU beat East Texas Baptist, 7-6, in the first game of a doubleheader.  The Mountaineers lost the second game, 9-8.

In the first game, after SU had gotten the lead back, senior A.J. Mann came on in the seventh and only gave up one walk to record his first save of the year.  Freshman David Hinebaugh earned his first collegiate victory by throwing 2-1/3 innings, giving up just one run on two hits.

As has been the case so far in this young season, Schreiner fell behind early as ETBU scored twice in the first inning off sophomore starting pitcher Brandon Pape.  The lead was 3-0 in the bottom of the third when SU answered with three of its own.  ETBU (5-1) led 6-3 in the sixth, but the Mountaineers (1-5) quickly loaded the bases with no out.  After a pitching change, Martinez hit Cody Jones' second pitch threw the infield to clear the bases.  Junior Justin Garza sacrifice bunted Martinez to third.  After an intentional walk to sophomore Oscar Ibieta, Jones was called for a balk which plated Martinez.  Martinez had three hits, including a double, 3 RBI and 3 stolen bases.  Senior Richard Sanchez had two hits and junior Eric Crenwelge scored twice along with Martinez.

In the second game, SU's offense got on the board first for the first time this year.   SU scored five runs in the bottom of the first.  Schreiner got four straight hits with two outs.  The big ones were the first and last of the string.  Senior Oliver Stogsdill drilled a two-run triple to the fence.  After singles by freshman Eric Bukowski and Sanchez, freshman catcher Roger Chavez delivered a two-run single to cap the scoring.

Freshman Matt Valley started his first collegiate game and was solid through five innings.  In the sixth he tired and left the game with a 7-3 lead.  ETBU had success against two SU relievers (sophomores Michael Houser and J.P. Garcia) over the remaining innings - aided by a couple defensive miscues.

Schreiner retook the lead, 8-7, in the bottom of the seventh, 8-7, but single runs in the eighth and ninth proved to be the difference.  Mann took the loss in relief, going 1-1/3 innings and allowing one run.
