Mountaineers
Rally in 9th to Tie, Win in 11th to Split DH
Schreiner rallied for five runs in the top of
the ninth inning in Saturday's second game to
tie LeTourneau and then scored two runs on a
throwing error in the 11th and freshman Korey
Rose kept the YellowJackets from scoring as
Schreiner won 12-10 to split their doubleheader.
SU (3-6) took two of the three games but fell
6-3 in the opener of the doubleheader earlier in
the day.
In that first game, SU scored first, but
LeTourneau (3-2) knocked junior starter Colton
Hermes (0-2) around a bit in scoring five runs
in the second inning to take the lead.
Hermes would settle down and went another
three-plus innings without allowing another
score before being replaced. The
Mountaineers would score twice over the next
four innings to come within 5-3 but the Jackets
added an insurance run late in the game to gain
the win. Both teams had seven hits and
Schreiner stranded a number of baserunners.
Junior J.D. Escobar went three-for-three to lead
the Mountaineer bat attack.
In the second game, LeTourneau jumped on
freshman starter Matt Valley. Valley would
make it to the fourth inning but was down 7-2 by
that time. Sophomore Brandon Pape
would go the next 3-1/3 innings allowing two
additional runs. Schreiner scored three
more runs but still trailed 10-5 going into the
top of the ninth. Thanks to a couple
walks, and key hits by seniors Ray Martinez
(double) and Richard Sanchez, SU would rally to
tie the game. Freshman Korey Rose came in
to relieve Pape in the eighth and was very
effective, sending the game into extra innings.
Neither team scored in the 10th. Schreiner
got two runners on as junior Eric Crenwelge was
on third and senior Ray Martinez on second when
freshman Marcus Myhaver came to the plate.
He sent a grounder to short. Martinez did
a good job of screening the grounder, but it was
fielded and then thrown into the dugout scoring
both Escobar and Martinez. Rose (1-1),
pitching his fourth inning, got the first two
batters out and then gave up a two-out walk to
bring the tying run to the plate. He got
the final out on a pop up and Schreiner earned
two out of the three wins in the weekend series.
Escobar was the hitting star for the series,
going 7-for-13. |
