Trinity Uses
Early Offense to Edge SU, 7-6
Visiting Trinity jumped out to a 7-1 lead and
withstood a middle inning rally by Schreiner to
post a 7-6 non-conference win in Kerrville
Tuesday afternoon.
SU sophomore starting pitcher Brandon Pape (0-2)
got the first two outs of the game, but walked
the next batter and also hit a batter later in
the inning. Throw in a single, stolen base
and double and Trinity had a quick 2-0 lead.
The Tigers (5-6) scored two more runs in the
third inning. Again, walks were involved
as Pape walked two of the first three batters.
Another double scored both runners and SU was
down by four runs.
Junior J.D. Escobar was hit by a pitch in the
bottom of the third. SU took advantage of
one of Trinity's four errors on the day to move
the runner around. Escobar then stole home
in a double steal with senior Ray Martinez to
cut the deficit to three.
Sophomore Michael Nicholson was pitching for SU
in the fourth when three more runners scored.
Two more walks and a double got Trinity going.
Junior Eric Wehmeyer came in to relieve
Nicholson and got out of the inning but not
before Trinity was up 7-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, SU (3-7) started its
comeback. Escobar, junior Eric Crenwelge
and Martinez had consecutive singles to start
the inning. After a pitching change,
freshman Marcus Myhaver drove in one with a
single. Another run came in on sophomore
Oscar Ibieta's fly out and another scored on a
passed ball. Joe A. Pena drove a deep fly
to center field which scored Myhaver on the
sacrifice out.
In the bottom of the sixth, Crenwelge's single
followed by Martinez' double brought the home
team to within one at 7-6. SU had a chance
in the eighth with a runner in scoring position
but couldn't push the run across.
Wehmeyer was strong in relief and kept the
Mountaineers close, going 5-1/3 innings,
scattering five hits, striking out three and not
walking any. The other SU pitchers
combined for 6 walks - four of which led to runs
scored. Schreiner did not have an error
defensively. |
