Hermes,
Wehmeyer Pitch SU to 4-1 Win and Split with HPU
Junior Colton Hermes went six strong innings and
junior reliever Eric Wehmeyer picked up his
second save as SU controlled Howard Payne, 4-1,
and earned a split of their doubleheader.
Howard Payne had 23 hits and took advantage of
eight SU walks in the second game for a 24-12
win which ended Schreiner's four game winning
streak.
In the opening game, it was all about the
pitching as Hermes and Wehmeyer were dominant.
Hermes (1-2) flashed his best stuff this year in
getting his first win. Wehmeyer, who threw
two hitless innings in Friday's 9-2 win, came
back and looked equally impressive in his one
inning of work in Saturday's first game.
Other details from the game were not available.
In the second game, the Mountaineers (2-1 in
ASC) scored in every inning, but couldn't
overcome the damage the Yellow Jackets (1-2 in
ASC) caused in the fourth and fifth innings.
Schreiner scored in the top of the first on a
double by sophomore Oscar Ibieta and on a passed
ball to take a 2-0 lead. HPU took
advantage of a walk by freshman Matt Valley
(0-1) and added two hits to tie the score at the
end of one inning. In the second inning,
senior Ray Martinez' triple brought one run home
and another double by Ibieta scored two more as
SU led 5-2. Junior Eric Crenwelge's RBI
sacrifice fly in the third made it 6-2.
After HPU got one run back in the third, the
Mountaineers tallied two more in the fourth on
freshman Eric Bukowski's single to make it 8-3.
The fourth though would be the beginning of
trouble for SU's pitchers. Valley got one
more out but gave up three runs before giving
way to freshman Korey Rose. Rose walked
each of the three men he faced, bringing home
another run and was replaced by Wehmeyer.
Wehmeyer, perhaps tired from his third
appearance in a day, gave up five straight hits
and was replaced by freshman Travis Sandefer who
induced both batters he faced into outs but the
damage was done as 11 HPU
runs scored in the inning. In the fifth, freshman Marcus Myhaver
cut into the lead with a solo home run, but the
Jackets scored six more times in the bottom of
the inning off three SU pitchers
- aided by three more walks. The
Mountaineers scored in the next two innings as
well but dug too deep a hole to recover from as
daylight ran out and the game ended after seven
innings. Ibieta had four of SU's 12 hits
and drove in four runs.
Schreiner hosts Sul Ross State for a three-game
series beginning on Friday afternoon at
Mountaineer Field. |
