Hermes Throws Another Gem as SU Sweeps Sul Ross State

Photo: Freshman Marcus Myhaver had another big game in SU's sweep.

Junior Colton Hermes threw eight shutout innings as Schreiner dominating visiting Sul Ross State in a 13-0 win and a sweep of Saturday's doubleheader in Kerrville.  The Mountaineers (4-1 in ASC) won the opening game by scoring four times in the bottom of the seventh to rally for a 6-5 win.

In that opening game, Sul Ross State (1-4 in ASC) scored two first inning runs off SU starter Roger Ayala on a Javier Arrieta home run.  The Lobos scored two more in the second on a Monte Piper homer.  The Mountaineers cut the lead in half in the third inning on a 2-RBI double by sophomore Oscar Ibieta.  Ayala (3-0) settled down and gave up only one more run the rest of the way and allowed five hits, four earned runs, struck out seven and gave up three walks in seven innings of work.  That set up the final inning heroics for Schreiner.  Junior Eric Crenwelge pinch hit to start the inning and drew a walk.  Junior J.D. Escobar also walked.  After a pitching change, senior Ray Martinez walked to load the bases with no outs.  Freshman Marcus Myhaver's single and subsequent error on the shortstop cleared the bases and tied the score.  After Ibieta struck out, senior Oliver Stogsdill was intentionally walked and freshman Eric Bukowski delivered the game-winning hit.

In the second game, Schreiner took control early by scoring two runs each in the first and second innings.  Stogsdill's single scored the first two runs and Martinez' double scored the second pair.  Myhaver drove a run home in the fourth to make it 5-0.  SU broke it open in the fifth.  Myhaver's double scored two more as did Ibieta's single.  Now the score was 9-0.  The Mountaineers scored four more runs in the seventh with just one hit - but were aided by two SRS errors.

Hermes (2-2) went eight innings, scattering five hits, striking out 11 and walking four.  Junior Eric Wehmeyer returned to form with one inning of one-hit relief.  In his last outing last Saturday vs. Howard Payne, Hermes pitched a seven-inning complete game win and only gave up one run on five hits.

Myhaver was 5-for-8 on the day, with six RBI and five runs scored.  Ibieta drove in five runs on the day with three hits.  Stogsdill had four RBI in the second game alone.  Bukowski added two more RBI to his game-winner from the first game.  Martinez crossed the plate five times on Saturday and continued his hot hitting, going 4-for-6 with two walks.

Schreiner has won 8 of its last 10 games and will attempt to go for the series sweep tomorrow at Noon at Mountaineer Field.
