Martinez'
Double Gives SU & Valley a 4-3 Win and Series
Sweep

Martinez' ninth inning double which gave SU a
series sweep of SRSU
Once again, Schreiner got a great performance
from a starting pitcher but it took senior Ray
Martinez' double with none out in the bottom of
the ninth to secure the 4-3 win over visiting
Sul Ross State.
Freshman Matt Valley (1-1) pitched the complete
game (9 innings, five hits, two earned runs, 3
strikeout, no walks) and got the win. He
was dominant for eight innings and carried a 3-1
lead into the ninth before running into some
trouble. Sul Ross State (1-5 in ASC) got
the first two men on to start the inning.
After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into
scoring position, Alan Droke hit a grounder to
the right side of the infield. Sophomore
Alex Brummel had a difficult time fielding the
ball and his throw to Valley covering first base
was late. One run scored but when Valley
couldn't handle the throw, the tying run also
scored on the play. Valley came right back
and retired the next two batters and that set
the stage for yet more late game heroics from
the 2009 Mountaineers (5-1 in ASC).
Junior Eric Crenwelge hit a bloop single to
start the inning. Lobos' starter Lucas
Garza, who also pitched a strong game, was
called for a balk, moving Crenwelge into scoring
position.
Martinez attempted to sacrifice bunt Crenwelge
into scoring position, but wasn't successful.
With two strikes on him, he swung away and
smacked a double into right center that easily
scored Crenwelge with the winning run.
The game was a quick one, and both pitchers
dominated early. Through three innings, SU
only had two hits and Valley was working on a
no-hitter. In the top of the fourth,
Javier Arrieta got SRSU's first hit - his second
home run of the series, and the Lobos had a 1-0
lead. Schreiner came right back with two
in their half of the fourth. Freshman
Roger Chavez drove in both runs with a two-out
single to take the lead. SU added an
insurance run, which turned out to be huge, in
the eighth when junior J.D. Escobar's squeeze
bunt scored sophomore pinch runner Abel Lora.
Martinez and Crenwelge each had three hits in
four at-bats.
Schreiner (12-9 overall) has now won four in a
row, six of their last 7 and 9 of 11. The
Mountaineers currently are in first place in the
ASC West Division standings nearly one-third of
the way through divisional play. Before
the season, Schreiner was picked seventh in the
ASC West in voting by ASC coaches. |
