Tornados Sweep Senior
Day
In a battle to stay
alive in the playoff hunt, Concordia swept the
home team and now awaits their fate as the
team’s destiny lies in the hands of UMHB. The
Mountaineers hoped to play the role of spoiler
today, and knock the Tornados out of the playoff
picture, (by taking at least one game in the
doubleheader) but the twisters’ bats had a
different game plan.
In game 1 of the
doubleheader, Colton Hermes took the mound
determined to not allow a repeat of yesterday’s
shellacking. He did all he could to keep the
good guys in the game by pitching 3 shut out
innings, and allowing a total of 4 earned runs
in 6 innings pitched with 4 strike outs and 1
walked batter. However, the Tornados were able
to score a pair of runs in the 4th, 5th,
and 7th innings to take the first
game 6-0.
Concordia pitcher, Michael
Johnson, was in the zone as he went the
distance, pitching 7 shut out innings allowing
only 2 hits and recording 15 strike outs.
Game 2 started on a much
more positive note, as the Mountaineers took
their first lead of the series when AJ Mann
blasted a 2 run homer over the left center field
fence in the first inning. Concordia pulled
ahead in the 4th inning when Yeager,
Cmerek, and Lippert each drove in one run.
In the 5th
inning, Concordia took over the game scoring 2
runs off a Kinart triple and another off of a
Thielpape sacrifice fly.
AJ Mann came into pitch in
the 7th inning and was hit in the
back of the head in the 8th when Concordia
attempted a double steal. Kinart was successful
stealing second, and when Williams left 3rd
to steal home, Mann was hit by the throw from 2nd
to home. Showing his toughness and desire to
help his team, Mann shrugged off the blow and
retired the side with an unassisted play at
first base. Then, as if to let everyone know he
was fine, Mann stepped up to the plate in the 8th
and took a pitch from Ontiveros downtown with a
2 run blast…Mann’s second on the day. Still it
proved to be too little too late as Concordia
won the game 11-4.
In between games, Coaches
Castillo and Holland recognized seniors Ray
Martinez, Richard Sanchez, Roger Ayala, Oliver
Stogsdill and AJ Mann for the hard work and
dedication they have shown the baseball program
here at SU.
The Mountaineers close out
the regular season 14-23 overall, and 7-14 in
ASC Conference play.
