UMHB Outduels Schreiner for 5-1 Win
UMHB Jared Hopper threw a complete game
three-hitter and struck out 13 Schreiner batters
in a 5-1 win in the first game of their three
game series.
Hopper was in a 0-0 pitching duel through five
innings with Schreiner senior Roger Ayala.
In the top of the sixth, senior A.J. Mann got on
base via a two base error to put SU (6-7 in ASC)
in scoring position. Senior Richard
Sanchez singled to left center to drive in Mann
with the go-ahead run.
In the bottom of the sixth, UMHB (8-5) answered
with three runs of their own to take the lead.
Junior Eric Wehmeyer relieved Ayala in the
bottom of the sixth. The Crusaders scored
two runs in the bottom of the seventh as
insurance and SU could not rally against Hopper.
Ayala went 5-1/3 innings, giving up three runs,
six hits and struck out five. Wehmeyer
went the final 2-2/3, giving up two runs on
three hits with three strikeouts.
Sophomore Oscar Ibieta and Joe Andrew Pena had
SU's other two hits.
The Mountaineers will play a doubleheader with
UMHB in Belton on Saturday. |
