game on Saturday.
KERRVILLE, TX - Visiting
UT-Tyler took advantage of seven Schreiner
errors and earned a doubleheader sweep of
SU by the scores of 5-1 and 6-5 at Mountaineer
Field on Saturday afternoon.
In the first game, SU senior starter Colton
Hermes (0-2) was pitching well through four
innings.
He was behind
on the scoreboard but the only UTT (3-2) run was
unearned. In the fifth, Hermes attempted
to field a sacrifice bunt attempt with one out
and one on and was injured trying to make the
play. He had to be replaced by senior
reliever Eric Wehmeyer. UT-Tyler took
advantage of the change to get another run
across to go ahead 2-0. The Mountaineers
(1-4) rallied with a run to cut the deficit in
half.
The Patriots
got some breaks with sloppy SU defense and were
able to find more success at the plate against
Wehmeyer and scored three more runs over the
final two innings for the win.
In game two,
sophomore starter Jesse Paredes struggled
finding the strike zone and UTT was able to
score four runs in the first three innings to
take a lead. In the bottom of the third,
SU struck back for five runs and Schreiner
sophomore Eric Bukowski (0-1) came in in relief
of Paredes.
Bukowski
pitched ______ strong innings of relief shutting
down the UT-Tyler offense. In the top of
the seventh, with the score tied at 5-5 and two
outs and a man on second base, the game turned
on a grounder to freshman Trey Doebbler.
Doebbler threw high to first and freshman right
fielder Pete Trevino's throw home bounced away
from senior catcher Joe Pena, allowing the
game-winning run to score in the tough loss.
