SU
Survives Late Rally to
Beat ASC East Leaders,
67-62
Schreiner withstood a
14-0 run by visiting
Mississippi College and
stunned the ASC East
leaders and perennial
national power, 67-62.
The Mountaineers (3-6,
3-3 in ASC) played
arguably their best
defensive half in the
first half of Saturday's
game and held one of the
nation's most potent
offenses to 30% shooting
and only 23 points as SU
led by eight at the
break.
In the second half,
Schreiner may have had
its best offensive half
in recent years,
shooting a blistering
69% from the field and
yet it almost wasn't
enough against the
preseason top-20 ranked
Choctaws (7-3, 4-2 in
ASC).
SU fell behind 10-6
early but then started a
lengthy stretch whether
the Mountaineers clearly
were the more aggressive
team at both ends.
Over the next 12
minutes, Schreiner
outscored MC, 21-9 and
carried the momentum
into the locker room.
Mississippi make a quick
and furious charge to
start the second half,
cutting the deficit to
one, 35-34 after only
three minutes. The
Mountaineers regrouped
and pushed the lead back
to 8 over the next three
minutes. Then
Schreiner put on a
shooting barrage from
long range that
ultimately proved too
much for Mississippi to
overcome.
Sophomore Corey Tellis
started it off with a
three-point shot.
They senior Ronnie
Barney added two more
long bombs. Tellis
added another and Barney
finished the flurry off
with yet another as the
shot clock expired to
put Schreiner up 65-46
with six minutes
remaining. The
Choctaws would not go
away and quickly mounted
a 14-0 run to cut the
lead to 65-62 with less
than three minutes left.
Neither team scored for
two minutes and the game
hung in the balance
until Barney scored the
game's final basket with
four seconds left on a
breakaway. Barney
led Schreiner with 22
points. Tellis,
who had to shoulder the
load at point guard due
to illness and injury to
the teams other point
guards, yet had his best
game as a Mountaineer
with 16 points and 6
assists. Sophomore
Chris Jones-Conyers had
10 points off the bench.
Sophomore Keith Perry
led the team in rebounds
with 9 to go with his 8
points and four assists.
MC was led by KiKi
Christmas with a game
high 27.
