Mountaineers' Defense
Holds Off LeTourneau for
OT Win
Despite giving up a late
lead in regulation,
Schreiner rebounded in
overtime for a 69-66 win
at LeTourneau. It
looked like SU might win
in regulation but the
Yellow Jackets evened
the score for the only
time in the second half
on JJ Rockmore's put
back with less than six
remaining to force the
extra period. In
overtime, the
Mountaineers (4-7, 4-4
in ASC) took a three
point lead midway
through the five minute
period and held on late
to get the road win.
For most of the game,
the story of the day was
SU's defense.
Schreiner locked down a
LeTourneau team that was
fighting, if they could
get a win, to get back
into a tie at the top of
the ASC East Division
standings. The
Mountaineer defense and
cold LU shooting led to
a 26-19 SU lead at
halftime.
Schreiner would build
the lead to 13 in the
second half but the
Yellow Jackets (7-6, 5-4
in ASC) came back strong
in the closing minutes.
Freshman Trent Noack was
5-for-6 from the free
throw line to keep SU on
top but the visitors
could only manage to
split their final four
free throws which opened
the door for Rockmore's
put back - which tied
the score at 62-all in
regulation. In the
first two periods,
LeTourneau had a
decisive edge in
turnovers 17-5.
Still, the Mountaineers
broke on top and held on
in overtime and earned
an important road win.
Schreiner was led by
sophomore Corey Tellis
with 14 points, 8
rebounds and four
assists. Senior
Ronnie Barney had 10
points and 5 rebounds.
Schreiner was 15-20 from
the free throw line but
only could convert 5 of
its final 10 shots from
the charity stripe.
SU held LeTourneau to
30% shooting for the
game.
