CTX's Early 2nd Half Run
& Turnovers Cost
Schreiner
Concordia-Texas used a
19-2 run early in the
second half and that,
combined with 22
Schreiner turnovers,
turned a close game into
a 94-75 home win for the
Tornadoes. The 94
points given up are the
most vs. an ASC team
since new head coach
Drew Miller took over.
The previous most given
up was 84 at University
of the Ozarks in
December.
Much like Thursday's
home game vs. #15 UMHB,
Schreiner started fast
at Concordia. The
Mountaineers built their
biggest lead of the
night, 18-11, seven
minutes into the game.
Again, eerily similar to
the loss to UMHB,
Concordia rallied back
and took a comfortable
lead into halftime,
50-42. Damaging to
SU's hopes was a rash of
turnovers late in the
first half which allowed
CTX to go on a 14-5 run
to close out the half.
In the second half,
Schreiner quickly closed
on Concordia (9-5 in
ASC), cutting the lead
to five, 59-54, just
four minutes in, before
the Tornadoes' big run
put the game away.
Again, turnovers played
a role.
Freshman Riley Battle
continues to shine on
offense and led all
scorers with 26 points
on 8-for-13 shooting.
Another freshman, Mark
Mahaffy, didn't do a lot
on offense (2 points)
but had a hug night on
the boards. His 16
rebounds are a personal
and team high in
2007-08. Included
in that total were five
offensive rebounds.
He also had four steals.
Senior Ronnie Barney had
another solid all-around
night, providing 13
points and grabbing 7
rebounds.
Valentino Maxwell came
off the bench to lead
Concordia with 20 points
as four Tornadoes scored
in double figures.
Concordia hit on more
than half its shots in
each half.
