SU
Loses Heart-Breaker on
Maxwell's Buzzer-Beater
Concordia-Texas'
Valentino Maxwell hit a
fall-away 14-foot jumper
at the buzzer to beat
Schreiner, 74-72, in
Kerrville. SU had
pulled even in the final
minute on back-to-back
three pointers by senior
Ronnie Barney and
sophomore Cory Tellis to
tie the game with 35
seconds remaining.
With the shot clock off,
CTX (11-6 in ASC) ran
down the clock and
Maxwell delivered the
deciding basket.
Schreiner fell behind in
the first half by as
many as nine points but
was able to rally to
within five, 35-30, at
halftime. SU (4-12
in ASC) outrebounded the
taller Tornadoes 17-12
and also connected on
5-of-13 long range shots
to stay in contention.
Tellis, a point guard,
had six assists and five
rebounds in the first 20
minutes of action but SU
committed 16 turnovers
which allowed the
visitors to gain the
halftime lead.
In the second half, the
Mountaineers would rally
and then fall back
repeatedly. SU
took the lead briefly
with under five minutes
remaining, but CTX
answered with a run.
Schreiner's last rally
looked like it might be
enough to steal the win,
but for one last second
shot.
Sophomore Keith Perry
had a game (and personal
season) high 22 points
on 7-12 shooting,
including 5-for-7 from
long range.
Freshman Riley Battle
scored 12 and the senior
Barney, added 10 points.
Freshman Mark Mahaffy
had eight rebounds and
Tellis added 7.
Tellis' six assists were
also a game high.
Mike McDonald led CTX
with 18 points. SU
was able to nearly pull
off the come-from-behind
win despite Concordia's
59% shooting in the
second half. The
Mountaineers 11-25
shooting from behind the
arc helped keep the home
team right there at the
end.
