Schreiner Holds Off Sul
Ross State for Fifth ASC
Win
The
Schreiner Men's
Basketball team ran its
record to 5-1 when
holding its opponents to
less than 70 points in a
68-63 home win.
The Mountaineers (5-15
in ASC) held the
visiting Lobos to under
40% shooting for the
game but the game was
tight down the stretch.
SU broke on top early
and built a sizeable
lead at 16-8 with nine
minutes gone.
Schreiner maintained the
lead and would build it
to a game high 15 points
(32-17) with just over
three minutes before
halftime but Sul Ross
State (7-13 in ASC) made
a furious rally.
SRS' Roderick Gunter hit
a half court shot at the
buzzer to bring the
Lobos with eight, 34-26,
at halftime. It
was the second straight
game that the opponent
had hit a half-court
shot at the halftime
buzzer.
The Mountaineers showed
no ill affects at the
start of the second half
and built the lead to 11
only to watch SRS cut
the lead in half with a
five point possession.
The Lobos kept chipping
away at the lead and had
it down to one point,
64-63, with 22 seconds
left. Freshman
Matt Riley's two free
throws made it a three
point game and Sul Ross
State wasn't able to
answer in the waning
seconds.
Senior Ronnie Barney led
SU with 13 points.
Freshman Riley Battle
added 12. Freshman
Robert Blackshear came
off the bench to
contribute nine points
and six rebounds.
Gunter led SRS with 22
points.
