Howard Payne Pulls Away
for Win in Season Finale
Visiting Howard Payne
took control of the game
after halftime and
pulled away for a 78-58
road win in the season
finale for Schreiner and
first year head coach
Drew Miller. It
was also the final game
for SU seniors Ronnie
Barney, Justin Walker
and Stan Crockett.
On Senior Day, two of
SU's seniors (Barney,
Walker) got the
Mountaineers (5-16 in
ASC) on the board early
with a basket each.
The two teams traded
leads for the first 10
minutes but long-range
shooting from HPU's Lee
Scott (three early
three-pointers) and
their height advantage
started to take its
toll. SU trailed
at half by eight.
In the second half, the
Yellow Jackets (11-10 in
ASC) started pulling
away by crashing the
boards. SU's
defense could not get
the stops it needed to
get back into the game
and couldn't solve HPU's
interior defense.
The final score was the
biggest lead of the
night.
Barney led Schreiner
with 15 points in his
final game.
Freshmen Riley Battle
and Mark Mahaffy each
had 11 points.
Even on Senior Day, it
was not unusual to look
onto the floor and see
that four of SU's five
players were freshmen.
When the freshmen came
out, they were usually
replaced by sophomores
so the 2007-08 season
was a learning
experience for a very
young Schreiner team.
Expect another big,
talented recruiting
class to join this young
team for next year.
