D-II St. Mary's Runs
Past Schreiner in Opener
New Schreiner Head Men's
Basketball Coach Drew
Miller saw his team fall
behind NCAA Division II
(scholarship) St. Mary's
15-0 to open the game
and the Mountaineers
could never recover in a
season-opening road
loss.
The
Rattlers (1-0) came out
and quickly took control
of the game with the run
in the first five
minutes. A jumper
by freshman David
Flannery got SU (0-1) on
the board but the
Mountaineers couldn't
chip into the lead.
St. Mary's, also playing
their first game of the
year, held a commanding
41-17 lead at the half.
The Rattlers kept up the
pressure to open the
second half and the
final outcome was never
in doubt as St. Mary's
rolled to a 95-46 win.
Schreiner was led by
freshman Riley Battle
with 11 points on 4-12
shooting. The
other four SU starters
could only manage a
total of two baskets
between them.
Schreiner started three
freshmen, one sophomore
and senior Ronnie
Barney.
The Rattlers dominated
in most statistical
categories holding SU to
only 31% shooting while
scoring at a 52% clip.
Schreiner was
outrebounded by the
bigger St. Mary's team
41-31. Flannery
scored eight points off
the bench and added a
team-high seven rebounds
in only 16 minutes of
action. Sophomore
Corey Tellis led the
Mountaineers in assists
with five.
St. Mary's was led by
Rod Bellard with 19
points.
