UT-D Second Half Run Too
Much for SU in ASC
Opener
In a game
of runs, it was
UT-Dallas' second half
run which doomed the
Mountaineers in the ASC
opener for both teams.
The Comets (3-1, 1-0 in
ASC) turned a 38-39
deficit early in the
second half into a 66-47
lead with five minutes
remaining. The
Mountaineers rallied but
it was not enough in a
74-63 UT-D victory in
Kerrville.
The two teams started
out like boxers trading
punches. The game
was tied early and often
and there were numerous
lead changes. With
less than nine minutes
left in the first half,
the Comets led 22-21 but
then went on a 12-1 run
over the next four
minutes. Schreiner
(0-2, 0-1 in ASC)
rallied behind stingy
defense and closed the
half on an 8-0 run to
make it 34-30 at
halftime in favor of the
visitors.
Schreiner carried over
its momentum early in
the second half and took
a brief lead before the
Comets took off again.
The Mountaineers rallied
late but could get no
closer than 71-63.
UT-Dallas shot 55
percent from the field
to SU's 45% and had a
commanding 36-20 lead on
the boards. Ernie
Lowery led the Comets
with a game high 20
points and was the
catalyst for the final
UT-D run. Senior
Ronnie Barney was
Schreiner's top scorer
with 15 points on
5-for-8 shooting and
also had a team high
five rebounds.
Freshman Riley Battle
was hot in the first
half and ended up with
12 points.
Sophomore Corey Tellis
added 6 assists and
freshman Anthony
Garrison was tops in
steals with three.
UT-Dallas is a preseason
favorite to win the ASC
East Division. The
schedule doesn't get any
easier for the Mountaineers
and they now must go on
the road and face
NCAA Division I
UT-Arlington on Monday night.
