Schreiner Puts Scare
into Division II
Incarnate Word
NCAA
Division II Incarnate
Word had a difficult
time beating
non-scholarship
Schreiner University but
barely survived 79-71 in
the end. For the
Mountaineers, their
version of "baptism by
fire" is basically over.
SU has faced a steady
diet of NCAA Division I
and II teams in their
preseason portion of the
schedule and played
their best basketball
yet in the loss at UIW.
In the first half, it
was the visiting
Mountaineers applying
the pressure as the two
former Heart of the
Hills Conference (NAIA)
foes battled back and
forth throughout the
opening half. For
the first 16 minutes,
UIW's biggest lead was
two and SU's five.
Schreiner still had a
three point lead with
less than four minutes
until halftime but
Cardinals went on a 11-0
run to go up by eight
with two minutes before
the break. The
Mountaineers (0-4) kept
it close at
intermission, 43-37.
UIW (3-2) never trailed
in the second half, but
that doesn't mean that
they were very
comfortable.
Schreiner, after three
straight free throws by
senior Ronnie Barney,
tied the game at 60-all
with less than 10
minutes remaining in the
contest. The
Cardinals led by five
with just over two
minutes left, but back
to back turnovers doomed
the Mountaineers as UIW
went on a 5-0 run to put
the game out of reach.
UIW's Eric Nuncio had a
game-high 28 points to
lead the Cardinals.
Barney led Schreiner's
offensive effort with 22
points on 8-11 shooting.
He also added six
rebounds. Freshman
Anthony Garrison came
off the bench to
contribute with 12
points and a team-high
four assists.
Freshman Riley Battle
also provided a lift off
the bench with 10
points. Yet
another freshman, Mark
Mahaffy, was the
Mountaineer rebound
leader with nine to go
with nine points.
UIW outshot SU, 46%-41%,
but it was the smaller
Mountaineers who won the
battle of the boards,
38-37. SU held
Incarnate Word to 4-22
shooting from long
distance.
