Schreiner Never Trails
in Win Over UT-Tyler
Schreiner's defense held
visiting UT-Tyler to
only 19 first half
points and their offense
answered every Patriot
rally attempt in the
second half on the way
to a 70-61 win over the
visiting Patriots.
The Mountaineer win was
the first for new head
coach Drew Miller.
SU played stifling
defense in the first
half to get the lead.
The Mountaineers opened
the game on an 8-1 run.
UT-Tyler battled back
aided by a bench
technical on Schreiner
(1-4, 1-1 in ASC), but
the defense effectively
shut down the Patriots
until the final minute
of the first half.
During that time,
Schreiner outscored the
visitors 19-6 to take a
31-14 lead with only
seconds until halftime.
A furious UT-T rally,
including a
three-pointer at the
buzzer by Marlon Hill,
cut the SU lead to
31-19.
In the second half, UT-T
(2-4, 1-1 in ASC) kept
relentless pressure and
slowly chipped into the
lead. Just 3-1/2
minutes into the second
half, the score was
33-29. Freshman
Riley Battle (team high
12 points off the bench)
broke the run with a
three-pointer and that
set the tone for the
second half. Every
time the Patriots tried
to rally, Schreiner had
an answer at the
offensive end.
Another three, this time
by UT-T's Larry Ware,
cut the SU lead to 62-57
with just over two
minutes remaining in the
game, but freshman Mark
Mahaffy (10 points, six
rebounds) grabbed an
offensive rebound and
got the putback to push
the lead back to seven.
With less than one
minute remaining,
sophomore Keith Perry
(also a team high 12
points) may have
delivered the knockout
blow. His
three-pointer under
pressure gave SU a 67-59
lead and free throws by
senior Ronnie Barney and
Mahaffy sealed the win.
Freshman Anthony
Garrison added four
assists.
Schreiner outrebounded
the much taller and
bigger Patriots 28-27
but shot 77% from the
free throw line.
