Trinity took control of
the game in the opening
minutes, built up a huge
first half lead and held
off Schreiner's attempts
to rally in the second
half for a 77-66 win in
San Antonio. It
was the season opener
for both teams.
The game started early,
but SU started late
falling behind 17-7 four
minutes into the game.
It would only get worse
for the visitors as
Trinity's lead only grew
throughout the first
half. The Tigers
led 39-15 before the
Mountaineers (0-1)
rallied slightly to end
the half and closed the
gap to 44-23.
In the second half,
Schreiner got its
defense going and
quickly cut the lead
down to 49-36. SU,
using a full court
press, kept the pressure
on but Trinity (1-0)
answered every run.
Led by sophomore Riley
Battle (23 points, 8
rebounds) and junior
transfer Ralph Turner
(19 points), Schreiner
again closed the gap -
this time to 11 points.
Again, Trinity repelled
the rally. In the
final five minutes, SU
was able to get the lead
down to 10 points.
With just under five
minutes remaining and
down 10, Schreiner got a
steal but chose to take
three consecutive
three-point shots all of
which were off the mark
and that ended the
Mountaineers best chance
to make a run at the
Tigers.
Schreiner shot just
4-for-26 from the three
point line and shot only
8% from the arc in the
first half.
Overall, SU shot 31%
from the field, was
outrebounded 47-39 and
could manage only six
assists. The
Mountaineers were
extremely accurate from
the free throw line,
shooting 22-for-23 on
the night.
Freshman Mike Uwaga had
seven rebounds in only
19 minutes.
Sophomore David Flannery
scored 8 points.
Schreiner plays
Southwestern University
- a 74-59 loser to
Wisconsin-Stevens Point
in the other game of the
evening - today at 3:00
pm in San Antonio. |
