Southwestern Races to
Big Lead, Cruises
Southwestern University
built a quick 12-1 lead
and never trailed in
beating Schreiner 58-41
in San Antonio. It
was a script that was
similar to Schreiner's
first game, a 77-66 loss
to Trinity on Friday.
Once again, the
Mountaineers (0-2) fell
way behind early.
Trailing 16-4, Schreiner
went on an 11-0 run to
cut the lead to one
point, 16-15, with just
over seven minutes
before halftime.
The Pirates (2-1)
countered with a 15-4
run to make it 31-19.
Freshman Colton Kemp hit
a three-pointer just
before halftime to make
it 31-22 at the break.
Southwestern again
started the second half
off fast, scoring eight
of the first 10 points
to open up a 39-24 lead
and were never
threatened again.
The closest the
Mountaineers got was 10
points the rest of the
way.
Schreiner shot 28% from
the field, 23% from
3-point range.
Unlike the Trinity game,
SU was not effective
from the free throw
line, making just 8 of
18 attempts.
Sophomore Riley Battle
led the SU effort with
14 points.
Freshman Antonio Butler
scored 10 off the bench.
With the exception of
Battle, Schreiner's
other four starters
combined for two points.
The bench accounted for
61% of the offense.
The Pirates' Travis
Barber led all scorers
with 15 points.
Schreiner begins ASC
play in their next
outing, a December 1
game vs. UT-Tyler.
It will be the team's
home opener. |
