Mountaineers Learn
Lesson, Hold Off HSU for
Road Win
Schreiner built up a
solid halftime lead and
did what it took to get
a 72-70 road win in
Abilene. The game
was similar to a road
game at Ozarks a week
ago. In that game
too, Schreiner built a
double-digit halftime
lead only to see it slip
away in the second half
for a tough loss.
This time, SU maintained
its poise and came out
with the win.
For the first eight
minutes, HSU held the
lead for the bulk of
that time. With
just over 11 minutes
before halftime, junior
Chris Jones-Conyers'
layup but Schreiner (2-7
in ASC) up 13-11.
A Jones-Conyers free
throw extended the lead
to 11 (40-29) two
minutes before the half.
The lead was still nine
at the break, 44-35.
Sophomores Riley Battle
(11 points) and Mitch
Lawrence (9 points) led
the way for the
Mountaineers in the
opening 20 minutes.
In the second half, a
Battle three-pointer
gave SU its biggest lead
of the game, 49-35, with
17:43 left. Over
the next three minutes,
the Cowboys (2-7 in ASC)
used a 9-0 run to cut
the margin to 5 points.
HSU kept the pressure up
and cut the lead further
to two, 53-51, with over
10 minutes remaining.
The lead was still two
with just over 8 minutes
to go, when SU went on
an 8-0 run to push the
lead back to
double-digits (65-55).
An HSU three-pointer at
the buzzer got the
Cowboys as close as they
would get the rest of
the way.
Battle (18 points, 7
rebounds) and
Jones-Conyers (16
points) led four
Mountaineers in double
figures. Lawrence
added 12 points and
junior Ralph Turner had
11 points, 9 rebounds
and 4 assists.
Freshman Mike Uwaga
grabbed 8 boards.
The Mountaineers
outrebounded HSU 47-37.
