McMurry Overcomes
Late Deficit, Wins in OT
McMurry rallied from a
seven point deficit with
just over one minute to
play and tied the game
in regulation and then
won in the overtime
period, 93-87. For
39 minutes, Schreiner
was in control of the
game but might have
gotten ahead of
themselves in the final
minute.
With 1:17 left in
regulation, junior Ralph
Turner hit two free
throws to put SU up
71-64. After
McMurry converted two
free throws, sophomore
David Flannery answered
with two made free
throws of his own to put
the lead back to seven
with :59 left on the
clock. McM's
Rickey Burney's jumper
with 24 ticks left tied
the game and when
sophomore Mitch
Lawrence's shot fell off
the rim, the two teams
headed to overtime.
The two teams traded
baskets in the opening
minute. McMurry
(9-1 in ASC) built a
3-point lead but the
Mountaineers (2-8 in
ASC) got the margin down
to one half way through
the extra period on
sophomore Riley Battle's
jumper. Schreiner
went scoreless over the
ensuing two minutes and
that allowed McMurry to
build a five point lead
that stood up the rest
of the way.
Battle scored 31 points
on 12-23 shooting from
the field. He also
had 7 rebounds.
Turner scored 15 points
and had 7 assists.
Colton Kemp scored 10
points off the bench and
added six assists.
Freshman Mike Uwaga had
five blocks.
The Mountaineers had
more assists (19) than
turnovers (17) for the
first time this year.
McMurry shot 61% in the
second half to rally and
easily outpaced SU in
rebounding 52-34.
