Schreiner junior Ralph
Turner's jumper with :01
left broke a 72-all tie
and gave the
Mountaineers a win over
defending ASC Champion
Mary-Hardin Baylor,
74-72. The two
teams battled throughout
the second half with
neither team gaining
more than a five-point
advantage, but Turner
came through down the
stretch to lift SU.
Schreiner (3-9 in ASC)
opened the game with a
9-4 run and maintained a
lead throughout the
half. The lead
would grow to its
biggest of the game,
40-29, with two minutes
left before the half.
UMHB (7-5 in ASC) closed
the half on an 8-0 run
to make it 40-37 at
halftime, in favor of
the Mountaineers.
The Crusaders wasted no
time in jumping ahead by
scoring the first four
points of the second
half. Schreiner
answered with a 9-2 run
on consecutive
three-pointers by
Turner, junior Chris
Jones-Conyers and Turner
again to make it 49-43
with 17:30 left.
UMHB rallied and held a
small lead through the
next 10 minutes.
Mary Hardin-Baylor led
64-58 with 6:26 to go.
Jones-Conyers made two
free throws and freshman
Trevor Conner hit a
3-pointer to cut the
deficit to one with 5:45
left.
Jones-Conyers hit
another three to put SU
up 66-65. After
UMHB scored on a three,
Turner answered with one
of his own to put the
Mountaineers back in
front by one, 69-68.
Again Mary Hardin-Baylor
got the lead back.
This time is was
freshman Colton Kemp who
answered with a three of
his own to make it 72-70
with 1:05 to play.
UMHB's Tilmon Gaddy
scored to tie the game
with :20 seconds left
setting up the final
play. Turner took
the ball straight away
from the basket,
dribbled toward the foul
line, moved left and
shot from the elbow.
His 17 footer was pure.
UMHB took a desparation
halfcourt shot at the
buzzer which was wide of
the mark, and SU had an
important win.
Turner was solid all
game, scoring 26 points,
six assists, 5 rebounds,
two steals and only one
turnover in 39 minutes.
Jones-Conyers scored 18
and Conner came off the
bench to add 12.
Freshman Mike Uwaga was
strong under the basket
pulling down 10
rebounds. SU
outrebounded UMHB 31-21
for the game, shot 48%
from the field and 50%
from long range while
holding the visitors to
42% shooting.
This was the first of an
important four-game
homestand for SU.
The Mountaineers return
to the court on Tuesday
evening to play Texas
Lutheran. SU won a
close game last month in
Seguin, 69-67. |
