Pull Away Late for Sweep
of TLU

Ralph Turner makes a
free throw in the first
half of SU's win over
TLU.
Schreiner won it's
second straight game and
swept the season series
against visiting Texas
Lutheran with a 78-69
win in Kerrville.
The Mountaineers used a
decisive 8-0 run to put
the game away.
With 4:20 remaining, SU
led 63-59. Two
free throws by freshman
Trevor Conner started
the run, followed by a
basket by sophomore
David Flannery, two free
throws by junior Riley
Battle and finally a
floater in the lane by
Battle and the score was
70-59 with 2:28 to go.
The Mountaineers did
what they need to do
down the stretch to get
the win.
Schreiner started the
game quickly and got
ahead 8-2 but then saw
TLU start to take
control. The
Bulldogs (3-10 in ASC)
went on a 15-2 run to
make it 17-10.
Schreiner pulled back
ahead on a three-pointer
by junior Ralph Turner
to make it 20-19.
The lead would grow to
six points, 34-28, but a
tip-in at the buzzer by
TLU's Tyler Wanek
trimmed the lead to
34-30 at halftime.
Schreiner (4-9 in ASC)
pushed the lead to
seven, 42-35, on a
Battle drive. From
that point on, the game
became one of fouls -
including four
technicals. Both
head coaches and one
player on each side
would get technicals the
rest of the way, and
both teams were in the
double bonus by the 9:00
mark. From the
13:15 mark, when the
score was 42-41, until
the beginning of the
decisive run nearly 9
minutes later, the
margin fluctuated
between 3 and zero.
Then, the run ended the
Bulldogs hopes for a
road win.
Turner scored 24 points
and had 11 rebounds.
Battle scored 19,
Jones-Conyers 15 and
Flannery 10. SU
won the rebounding
battle 36-23.
Schreiner shot 48% for
the game and held TLU to
42%. With the win,
Schreiner moves into a
three-way tie for fifth
place in the ASC, with
Howard Payne and Sul
Ross State.
Ironically, those are
the Mountaineers next
two opponents and both
will be in Kerrville
later this week. |
