SU Shuts Down HPU for Third Straight Win

Schreiner's quickness and rebounding advantages led to a 76-64 win over Howard Payne - giving the resurgent Mountaineers their third straight home win and moved them up another notch in the ASC West standings.  In the course of less than a week, Schreiner has gone from 8th in the division to 5th with a chance to move higher.  SU completes this four game home stand on Saturday vs. Sul Ross State at 3:00 pm in Edington Center.

The game started slowly as both defenses were in control.  After 6-1/2 minutes of action, the score was only 9-9.  Schreiner used that quickness and rebounding advantage to move ahead 22-15 at the 8:40 mark and pushed the lead to 10 two minutes later, 27-17.  The lead was still 36-27 with 20 minutes to play.  Both teams shot 38% in the first half, but HPU was forced into 11 turnovers, giving SU eight extra shots in the half.

In the second half, the Yellow Jackets (4-10 in ASC) cut the lead to 44-40 with 12:20 to go.  Junior Chris Jones-Conyers hit a 3-pointer with 9:08 to play to make it 51-44.  At the 5:42 mark, HPU's Tom Herman split a pair of free-throws to bring the visitors within three, 57-54.  One of the key plays of the game occurred moments later as freshman Mike Uwaga soared over everyone for a rebound slam dunk to push the lead back to 5 points and brought a roar from the animated crowd.  For the next three minutes, SU's defense shut out the Jackets.  Sophomore Riley Battle got a putback basket and Uwaga hit a big three, to make it 66-54 with 2:41 to play.

HPU had chances to cut into the lead but went ice cold on several free throw attempts.  When Battle scored, was fouled and then subsequently made the free throw to complete the three-point play to make it 71-57 with 1:20 to play, the outcome was decided.  Schreiner improves to 5-9 in the ASC.

Battle scored 31 points on 12-21 shooting.  Uwaga had his best collegiate game with 10 points, 15 rebounds and was a defensive force all night (4 blocks).  Junior Ralph Turner added 12 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds.
