Outlasts Sul Ross State
for 4th Straight Win

under the basket
Several Schreiner
players came up big in
the closing minutes as
Schreiner won it's
fourth straight game and
moved higher in the ASC
standings with a 75-71
win in Kerrville
Saturday afternoon.
It's been several years
since a Schreiner
Basketball team has put
together a four-game win
streak. All four
of the wins were at home
as the Mountaineers (6-9
in ASC) now have moved
into 4th place in the
ASC West standings.
Schreiner started slowly
in the game, falling
behind 11-4 in the first
4:40. SU head
coach Drew Miller
quickly started making
substitutions to get the
players focused but it
took a lot of
substitutions before
anything good happened.
SU trailed 21-10 with a
little more than nine
minutes gone, but then
started turning things
around on the defensive
end. The
Mountaineers cut the
lead to 23-20 with 6:40
remaining and took its
first lead, 27-26, when
junior Ralph Turner hit
two free throws.
From that point on, the
rest of the half was a
struggle at the
offensive end for both
teams and fittingly, the
two teams were tied,
33-33, at the break.
That alone was a bit of
a victory for SU as the
Mountaineers shot 37%
from the field and were
0-5 from 3-point range.
SU was on target at the
foul line making
15-of-17 tries in the
first half.
Sophomore Riley Battle
continued his recent hot
streak and led all
players through 20
minutes of play, with 12
points.
In the second half,
Schreiner built a small
lead but couldn't shake
the pesky Lobos (4-11 in
ASC). The
Mountaineers could not
get more than a 3-point
lead. When Sul
Ross made a run, they
were able to take a lead
at the 11;40 mark.
Schreiner got back in
front on freshman Colton
Kemp's three, 54-50, but
SRS rallied over the
next 4-1/2 minutes and
led 64-61.
One of two key plays by
freshman Mike Uwaga
started SU's final push.
With 4:14 to go and SU
down by 1 (64-63), Uwaga
blocked David Price's
shot and grabbed the
rebound as well.
The outlet went to
junior Ralph Turner who
was fouled driving to
the basket. His
two free throws put SU
back in front by one.
Sul Ross State tied the
game on a free throw and
had possession again,
when Uwaga came through
for the second time.
He skied into the air to
steal a pass and got the
ball up to Battle who
scored on the other end
to put the Mountaineers
back in front by two,
67-65, with 2:45 to go.
Again, SRS answered and
tied the game.
Battle made two free
throws to give Schreiner
a brief lead but a three
point play by the Lobos'
Jimmy Martinez put the
visitors in front,
70-69, with 1:28 to go.
On the next play,
sophomore David Flannery
fouled out SRS's
Filiberto Torres and
made both free throws to
put SU ahead to stay
with just over a minute
left. Kemp made
two free throws and then
Turner added two more in
the closing seconds to
seal the win.
Battle scored 18 to lead
five Mountaineers in
double figures.
Flannery scored 12, Kemp
11 and both Turner and
freshman Jordan Cromeans
added 10. SU won
the battle on the glass,
32-23, and won despite
shooting just 9% (1-11)
from 3-point range.
SU had six blocks in the
game, five by Uwaga.
Schreiner goes on the
road for two games this
week, before returning
to the friendly confines
of Edington Center for
two games the following
week. |
