25-5 First Half Run
Helps HPU Halt SU Win
Streak at Four
Howard Payne used a 25-5
first half run to break
open a tight game and
went on to a 74-61 home
win in Brownwood.
The loss snaps
Schreiner's four game
win streak. Last
week, Schreiner beat the
same HPU team, 76-64, in
Kerrville.
The Yellow Jackets (5-11
in ASC) scored the
game's first six points
but Schreiner (6-10 in
ASC) rallied to within
two over the next seven
minutes to make the
score 14-12 with just
under 12 minutes before
halftime.
Sophomore Mitch Lawrence
was fouled but still
scored a basket and then
made the ensuing free
throw to give Schreiner
its first lead, 15-14
with 11:05 left in the
half. SU would
increase the lead to
three points on two
occasions, but the game
got away from the
visitors just a couple
minutes later.
Schreiner took the lead,
20-17, on junior Chris
Jones-Conyers' three
pointer with 9:11 left.
From that point on, HPU
took control. At
halftime, SU trailed
42-25. Schreiner
shot 34% from the field
and allowed the Jackets
to shoot 50% from the
field and 40% from
three-point range.
SU was outrebounded
20-15 in the first half
and had 15 turnovers.
In the second half,
Schreiner shot only
slightly better and
couldn't chip into the
lead. The closest
Schreiner would get was
the game's final
13-point margin.
For the game, the
Mountaineers shot 35%.
Jones-Conyers led
Schreiner with 14
points. Junior
Ralph Turner scored 10,
had 11 rebounds and
seven assists.
Sophomore Riley Battle
scored 13 points.
Tom Hermann led HPU with
a game-high 17 points
and 13 rebounds.
Schreiner will look to
get back on the winning
track on Saturday at Sul
Ross State. The
Mountaineers beat the
Lobos, 75-71, last
Saturday in Kerrville. |
