Sul Ross State Uses FT's to Post Important Home OT Win

Sul Ross State got redemption for a four point loss last Saturday in Kerrville with a 78-74 overtime win in Alpine that tightened up the race for the final ASC West playoff spot.  The game was a tight affair throughout, but free throw accuracy was one place where the game turned for visiting Schreiner.  SU hit only 60% of its free throw attempts (57% in regulation) while SRS hit over 82% - and was 11-for-12 in the second half.

Schreiner broke on top and maintained a slim lead for the first eight minutes of the game.  The Lobos (6-11 in ASC) took their first lead with 11:15 to go before halftime and the two teams traded the lead back and forth over the next eight minutes.  Sul Ross State used a 10-2 run over the closing minutes of the first half to take a 32-26 lead at intermission.

Schreiner (6-11 in ASC) didn't take long to catch up in the second half and continued to build a lead early in the period.  SU had its biggest lead of the night, 49-42, when sophomore David Flannery hit two free throws with 12:22 left in regulation.  Over the next 17 minutes, Sul Ross State outscored the Mountaineers, 17-1, to build its biggest lead, 57-50, with just over 6:30 left.  It was a two-point lead, 61-59, when SU junior Ralph Turner scored with 1:19 to go to tie the game.  Neither team would score in the final minute and the game went to overtime.

In the extra period, SU built a quick five-point lead, 66-61, but Sul Ross State did its damage at the free throw line from that point on, making 11-of-12 FT attempts and SU couldn't hold off the home team.  The loss drops Schreiner into a four-way tie for the fourth and final ASC playoff spot with four games to play.

Flannery had one of his highest scoring games and led all scorers with 19 points.  Turner had 15 points, 5 assists and 7 rebounds.  Sophomore Riley Battle had 13 points and 6 rebounds.  Freshman Trevor Conner came off the bench to score 11.

Schreiner hosts Concordia-Texas, which is in third place and just one-half game ahead of the Mountaineers in the ASC West standings next Thursday in Edington Center.  The Tornadoes beat Schreiner, 84-79, in Austin on January 22nd.
