Ends Schreiner's Season
with 97-78 Win

McMurry became the
fourth straight team to
score at least 96 points
against SU and handed
the Mountaineers a 97-78
win in the season
finale. Schreiner
ends its 2008-09 season
with six straight
losses, but the
Mountaineers didn't make
it easy. McMurry
only had a nine point
lead in the final
minutes but was able to
break SU's late-game
press for easy baskets
and pulled away.
Freshman Trevor Conner
scored a career-high 23
points on 9-for-14
shooting and was 5-for-9
from behind the
three-point arc - and
added 10 rebounds.
He almost
single-handedly brought
the Mountaineers (6-15
in ASC) back from a big
early deficit with his
long-range shooting.
Junior Ralph Turner
(also seven assists) and
sophomore David Flannery
each scored 15 points.
Junior Chris
Jones-Conyers added 12
points.
One of the early story
lines on this game was
early foul trouble for
freshman Mike Uwaga.
He picked up his third
foul less than three
minutes into the game
and was in foul trouble
all afternoon. He
was only able to be on
the court for 13
minutes. His
defensive presence was
important to combat
McMurry's (17-4 in ASC)
front line.
Without him inside, SU's
other big men had to
pick up the slack.
SU took an early lead
but it would be their
only lead in this game.
With five minutes gone,
SU was down 9 points but
that was when Conner
came in and lit it up
from deep. Conner
hit three bombs in the
next three minutes and
pulled Schreiner into a
17-17 tie. McMurry
pushed the lead back to
eight and SU rallied on
two occasions to within
one point. At
halftime, Schreiner
trailed 39-35.
In the second half,
McMurry quickly pushed
the lead to 14 in the
opening three minutes.
Schreiner would get to
within seven on three
occasions and to within
nine all the way until
three minutes to play
but McMurry ended the
game on a 12-2 run to
pull away.
McMurry dominated the
rebounding totals, 36-22
and shot 51% for the
game to 46% for SU.
Schreiner has no seniors
on the team and should
return intact with a
year's experience next
fall. |
