Turner, Battle and Uwaga Earn All-ASC Awards for 2008-09 Season

Junior Ralph Turner, sophomore Riley Battle and freshman Mike Uwaga all earned All-ASC West Division honors for their play this year.

Turner (Boerne, TX) earned second team All-ASC West Division is in his first year as a Mountaineer after transferring from Cal-Los Angeles.  He made a big impact right from the start of his SU career as he was second on the team overall in scoring at just under 15 points per game, first in assists (3.6/game) and third in steals (1/game) and was one of the ASC's best free throw shooters (86%).  Even though he played the point guard spot most of the year, he was just edged out for the team lead in rebounding (6/game).  It was in the most important games - conference contests - that Turner stepped up.  His statistics for ASC games were better in just about every category possible.  His highest scoring game of the season was a 31-point effort in a 96-91 home loss to Concordia-Texas on February 12th, but the best game of his Mountaineer career may have been on December 18th at TLU when he scored 22 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and handed out 7 assists.

Battle (Waxahatchie, TX) earned honorable mention All-ASC West after leading Schreiner in scoring at 15.3 ppg.  His highest scoring output of the year was 31 points which he had on two occasions.  The first was on January 17th in an overtime loss at McMurry - a game that also saw him grab seven rebounds - and  the second came 12 days later in a home win over Howard Payne.

Uwaga was named to the ASC West All-Freshmen team after a season in which he battled nagging injuries throughout, but when he was on the court, his impact was evident to opponents and fans alike, whether he scored any points or not.  The 6'6 Dallas native was a force in the paint and a game changer for anyone looking to go the basket.  His five blocks vs. Texas State was a season high but his best game could have been in that Howard Payne home win when he had 10 points, 15 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks.  For the season, he averaged just under four points, over six rebounds, led the team in steals (31) and had 2/3 of the teams total of blocks (40).
