Jimmy Smith was hired as
Schreiner University's
new head men's
basketball coach on
April 27, 2012.
Prior to his hiring,
Smith had been the
assistant men's
basketball coach at the
University of Mary
Hardin-Baylor - a fellow
member of the American
Southwest Conference -
for the past three
years. During that
time, an already highly
successful program saw
it's greatest success in
its history.
During his tenure, UMHB
posted an .800 winning
percentage, made three
NCAA Tournament
appearances, one
American Southwest
Conference Championship
and two ASC West
Division titles.
In 2011, the Cru made it
to the NCAA "Sweet 16"
and finished 24-1 in the
regular season and 20-1
in ASC play, which are
all school records. In
both the 2011-12 and
2010-11 seasons, UMHB
had been consistently
ranked among the top
five in the national
polls. The program
has also seen
outstanding improvement
in the academic success
of its players over that
time.
Prior to coaching at his
alma mater, Smith had
been a very successful
healthcare
representative for
pharmaceutical giant
Pfizer for three years.
In July 2009, Smith made
the decision to go back
to his passion and his
basketball coaching and
teaching roots and
returned to assist his
former head coach during
his playing days, Ken
DeWeese, at his alma
mater.
Before Pfizer, Smith was
an assistant coach on
the men's basketball
staff at NCAA Division I
Sam Houston State while
at the same time was
working on his master's
degree. At
SHSU, he coached under
Bob Marlin - who is now
the head coach at
Louisiana-Lafayette -
for two years. The
Bearcats posted a record
of 40-21 in those two
seasons and went 22-10
in the Southland
Conference over that
span. He earned his MBA
from SHSU in 2005.
In his own playing
career, Smith was a
four-year letter-winner
for DeWeese at Mary
Hardin-Baylor. He
was also a three-time
Academic All-ASC honoree
and was named to the
Verizon/CoSIDA Academic
All-District VI First
Team his senior year.
He graduated in 2004
with a degree in
business administration.
He met his wife Lori
while working at Pfizer
and the couple married
in the summer of 2010.
They welcomed their
first child, Harrison,
in December of 2011.
The Smith family is in
the process of moving to
Kerrville. |
