Leads SU MCC to Sixth Place Finish
at Bulldog Opener
Freshman Anthony Johnson got
his collegiate men's cross country career off to a solid
start at the TLU Bulldog Opener in Seguin this weekend.
He led a balanced group of Schreiner runners in the official
rebirth of Men's Cross Country at SU.
Johnston completed the 8,000 meter course in 31:28 to finish
in 29th place individually. He was followed by a pack
of SU runners including freshman Alex Price (36:19, 40th),
sophomore Lupe Garza (37:53, 41st), junior Lazaro Alvarez
(39:27, 43rd) and sophomore Ray Martinez (39:30, 44th).
Johnson's finish was even more impressive as he was injured
when he twisted his ankle coming off a curb. His
status for this week's race in Georgetown is unknown.
Head Coach Rodney Holland
was pleased with his team's effort. "On the men's
side it was a very fast-paced 5 mile race. Anthony
Johnson started out the race very well and was in 4th
place at the 1 mile mark with a time of 5:35. Coming
around to the mile 2 mark, the runners had to cross from
grass to the street and Anthony stepped down off of the
curb wrong and rolled his ankle. He was
limping and in pain and this dropped him back to the
middle of the pack. He was able to
still finish the race with a good time of 31:28. Alex,
Lupe, Lazaro, Ray and Will all finished with decent
times but, like great athletes, they are looking forward
to the next meet because they all feel they can do a lot
better." |
