Martinez
Earns Top 10 Finish in First Collegiate Tournament
Freshman Arnie
Martinez got his collegiate career started with a top-10
finish in his very first event, the John Bohmann Memorial
Invitational at Max Starcke Park GC in Seguin. His
two-day total of 144 (72, 72) led the Mountaineers to an
11th place finish in the 15-team field that included former
junior college national champions and nationally-ranked
four-year programs. Martinez was solid both days and
overcame adversity each day. On day one, rain and
thunderstorms caused difficult conditions (reducing the
event to 36 holes instead of 54) and a 3-hour weather delay.
On day two, his round started strangely. On his first
hole of the day, he overcame a self-called penalty as his
ball moved at address. He still managed to convert the
15-foot par putt and then chipped in from 60 feet on his
second hole to get his round off to a good start that lasted
the remainder of the event.
Freshman Colby Mahan finished
64th overall at 165 (82, 83), freshman Justin Brown in 65th
at 166 (78, 88), sophomore Bobby Villcheck in 66th at 167
(83, 84) and freshman Brent Stanford was 72nd at 170 (85,
85).
"Arnie has been as solid as a rock since he arrived on
campus. We had absolute confidence that Arnie would
give us his best and that it was likely to be a great
result. He didn't disappoint and has a tremendous
future ahead of him," states Ron and Anna (Acker) Macosko,
golf coaches at SU. |
