Grona, Mountaineers Each
Finish 4th at LeTourneau Classic
Sophomore Kyle
Grona shot the second lowest round of the tournament, a 71,
in the final round and finished 4th individually at the
LeTourneau Spring Classic. Schreiner also finished
fourth in the event.
The Mountaineers, playing their final event of the season in
an attempt to qualify for the ASC Golf Championships, fell
into a hole after round one that they couldn't recover from.
Ranked in a virtual dead-heat with Mississippi College for
the final spot, SU struggled with nerves in the first round
and trailed MC by 19 with two rounds to play.
Schreiner outplayed the Choctaws in each of the final two
rounds but couldn't make up the big deficit and will miss
playing in the post-season.
Grona, like the Mountaineers, started slowly in round 1.
He shot an 80 but rallied with a 76 in the afternoon 18
holes. Through two rounds, he was in 8th place
individually, but advanced four spots in the final round
with the 71. That ties both his and the team low
rounds for the year. Early in the season, both he and
freshman Steven Bell recorded 71's at the season-opening
John Bohmann Classic.
Freshman Jay Chapman shot an opening round 79 to pace
Schreiner, but could only manage 80 in both his final two
rounds. He finished 10th overall. Bell rebounded
from a difficult opening round to finish 21st and another
freshman, Jacob Torres, finished 26th. Sophomore Brent
Stanford rounded out the SU results with a 30th place
finish.
Grona and Chapman qualified for the ASC Championships as
individuals and will travel to Anna, TX next week.
