Bell, Grona Lead
Mountaineers to 10th Place Finish
You can't get much
younger than Schreiner's Men's Golf's starting five for the
season-opening John Bohmann Invitational in Seguin.
The Mountaineers played four freshmen and one sophomore who
had just one collegiate tournament under his belt.
Despite the lack of collegiate experience, the young
Mountaineers had one of the finest three-day totals in
recent memory, shooting scores of 300-301-306 to finish 10th
in the strong 15-team field.
Freshman Steven Bell led the SU squad with a one-under par
71 in Monday's opening round. All the players
continued and played a second 18-holes on Monday. In
the afternoon, SU featured a balanced effort and stood in
12th place with one round to play.
On Tuesday, Schreiner was a man down so the four remaining
players had the added responsibility of knowing that their
score would count. Throw in heavy early-round rain and
lingering fatigue after Monday's grueling 36-hole day and
the young Mountaineers were poised for a letdown.
Instead, led by sophomore Kyle Grona (Ingram, TX), who shot
a one-under 71, Schreiner managed to post a very respectable
306 total and moved up to 10th place.
Bell was SU's top finisher at 225, followed by Grona's 226.
Freshman Jake Torres shot 233 while fellow freshman Austin
Griffin shot 234.
Host Texas Lutheran, the defending ASC champions and
currently ranked #11 in the nation, won the tournament in a
playoff over national powerhouse Tyler Junior College.
Schreiner tied LeTourneau and Southwestern University
at 907.
