Cornish Comes Up Big for SU Men on Day 2 of Comanche Trace Shootout

Freshman Jared Cornish, playing in his first collegiate tournament, led the Schreiner men's golf team to a fourth place finish at the Schreiner Spring Shootout at Comanche Trace.  NCAA Division I UT-Pan American won the tournament with a two round total of 605.  UTPA's Armen Kirakossian won the individual title by shooting 70-72.

The Mountaineers were in fourth place after the first round, and didn't move up or down in round two, despite Cornish's strong play.  Schreiner shot a team score of 323 in a cold, intermittent drizzle.

Cornish was -1 through seven holes but ran into trouble on his eighth hole of the day.  He finished the nine with a score of 37 but had trouble with the Comanche Trace's greens on his back nine.  Still, Cornish finished 9th overall with a two round score of 157.  Junior Kyle Grona was 14th at 160 while sophomore Jay Chapman was one stroke back in 19th.  Freshman Mark Salazar was in 32nd place and junior Brent Stanford 36th.  Freshman Will Ramon, playing as a medalist, finished 33rd.

#29 ranked McMurry finished second after shooting 312 in the final round.  Texas Lutheran shot 318 to finish third.  Hardin-Simmons finished in fifth place followed by LeTourneau, Concordia-Texas and Texas A&M International.
