Mountaineers
Falter on Day Two at UMHB Invitational

The Schreiner Men's
Golf team couldn't duplicate its solid first day effort and
fell to 16th at the UMHB Invitational at Mill Creek Country
Club in Salado.
The Mountaineers, playing their first tournament of the fall
because an earlier tournament was postponed due to Hurricane
Ike, played solid golf in the first round. SU shot a
308 which left the team in 13th place in this strong field
of competitors that featured scholarship programs from NCAA,
NAIA and NJCAA. After day one, SU was in the middle of
the pack and could easily have moved up numerous places with
a repeat performance in the final round. Junior Kyle
Grona led SU's effort with a 74. Sophomores Jay
Chapman (76) and Jacob Torres (77) were strong compliments
to Grona's performance. Freshman Will Ramon had a good
start in his first collegiate tournament shooting 81.
Unfortunately, Schreiner faltered significantly in the final
round, shooting 341 and dropped back three places.
Chapman had SU's best result, an 80, but would have been
better had it not featured a self-imposed two-stroke
penalty.
Overall, Chapman finished 46th in the 100 player field.
Torres finished 67th, Grona 70th, Ramon 90th and freshman
Jay Ray came in 93rd in his first college event.
"We've got some work to do to learn how to finish
tournaments, I guess," said Ron Macosko, co-head coach.
"If the best opportunity to learn is when we falter than
this was a great opportunity to improve for the future".
