Shoot Final Round 289, Finish 3rd at SU Classic

Freshman Jay Ray shot the lowest tournament round for SU
(70) in many years.
The Schreiner Men's Golf team shot 289 and moved up a
spot to finish third in the first Schreiner Fall Classic at
Scott Schreiner GC in Kerrville. UT-Tyler, ranked #3
in the nation, won the tournament with a two day total of
566 including a 284 on the second day. NAIA Division I
UT-Brownsville shot 285 and finished second by two shots.
UTB's Adam Haley won the individual title by shooting
five-under par.
Freshman Jay Ray shot the third lowest round of the final
day, an even-par 70, to lead the Mountaineers to their best
finish in many years. Ray's round was a personal
collegiate best and the best single day round for an SU
golfer since at least 2004. Ray finished tied for 16th
place individually with sophomore Jacob Torres, who shot a
final round 72. Another sophomore, Jay Chapman (second
day 73) tied junior Kyle Grona for SU's best individual
finish as they tied for 10th place. Grona shot a
second round 76 after an opening round 71.
Junior Brent Stanford shot 74 yesterday after an opening day
77 and finished 24th. Freshman teammate Mark Salazar,
playing as a medalist, also shot 151. Raul Alvarado
(79) and Will Ramon (83) rounded out the medalist scores for
Schreiner.
SU shot 299 in the opening round and was in fourth place
going into the final day but rallied past LeTourneau
University to claim third place. LeTourneau was fourth
at 597 with Hardin Simmons in fifth (605), Concordia sixth
(613) and Texas A&M International (651) seventh.
Schreiner plays the postponed John Bohmann Memorial
Invitational next week in Seguin to finish their fall
season.
