John Bohmann Memorial
Schreiner battled the elements for a 10th place finish
at the John Bohmann Memorial Invitational at Max Starcke
Park GC in Seguin. Junior Kyle Grona was SU's top
finisher in each of the three rounds and finished 35th
overall.
The first 36 holes were played on Monday in very gusty
conditions which drove the scores up. Grona shot 78,
77 as SU was in 10th place with one round to go. In
the opening round, fellow junior Brent Stanford shot 79.
In the second round, the Mountaineers second best finish was
from sophomore Jacob Torres who matched Grona's low round.
In round #3, Grona was closing in on his best round of the
tournament but a late triple bogey derailed his bid for a
round in the low 70's. He settled for a 76.
Torres shot 78. Schreiner wasn't as sharp as last week
when the team played well in the inaugural Schreiner Fall
Classic. The Mountaineers opened with a 322 in
round one and then improved slightly - 313, 316 - in the final two rounds.
Oklahoma Baptist won the tournament and host TLU finished
second.
Torres finished 47th overall. Stanford was in 52nd
place. Freshman Mark Salazar finished 61st and
freshman Jay Ray was 67th.
Although the Mountaineers continue improve, they find
themselves in the toughest conference in the US.
Currently, five ASC teams are ranked in the 26th in the
nation. The Mountaineers will need to be motivated to
improve this off season if the team wants to move up in the
ASC. SU is off until the spring season begins in
February, 2009.
