Freshman Jared Cornish put together a solid tournament and
was fifth among ASC players.
Freshman Jared Cornish played three solid rounds in
gusting, cold conditions at the UT-Dallas Spring
Invitational and led Schreiner to a 10th place finish.
The tournament was played at Sherrill Park (#1) Golf Course
in Richardson, TX.
Cornish shot 77, 74, 81 and finished 12th individually over
the 7,081, par 72 course. The only players to beat
Cornish among the nine ASC teams (35 players) in the field
were four players from tournament champion and
nationally-ranked UT-Tyler.
In the first round of the first day, Cornish shot 77 despite
two triple bogeys. Freshman Will Ramon, despite being
sick, still came up with one of his best collegiate rounds
and matched Cornish's round. Junior Kyle Grona shot an
81.
In the afternoon round on day #1, Cornish got even better
with his two-over-par 74. Grona also improved and came
in with a 77. Ramon shot 85 as he struggled with the
lingering effects of playing 36 holes in one day while being
under the weather. To his credit, he came back with a
39 after an opening nine of 46 in the afternoon round.
The team was 12th after round one and moved up to 10th after
round two. Both opening rounds were played in heavy
winds which drove up the scores.
The final round was played again in high winds, but the
winds shifted around and were from the north driving
temperatures down and making the course even more difficult.
Grona finished 42nd and Ramon was 47th individually.
Freshman Raul Alvarado, in his first collegiate tournament,
finished 73rd and junior Brent Stanford 75th.
Among ASC schools in the field, Mary Hardin-Baylor finished
6th, host UT-Dallas was 7th followed by LeTourneau,
Hardin-Simmons and SU. Then came Mississippi College,
Louisiana College and Concordia-Texas. |
