Finish 2nd at LeTourneau Spring Invitational

Freshman Will Ramon had his best tournament of his young
career at LeTourneau.
Although the tournament was dominated by frigid
conditions and very blustery winds, Schreiner's Men's Golf
team still managed to finish runner up at the LeTourneau
Spring Invitational. The event was played at Pinecrest
Golf Club in Longview, but the course took a backseat to
Mother Nature. With winds in excess of 30 mph, out of
the north, and temperatures in the 30's both days, with wind
chills below freezing, it was hardly good days for golf.
Eventually, the course thawed out and the players managed as
well as possible in the conditions.
The first day had the warmer temperatures but the worst
conditions. The players had to play 36 holes that day.
In the first round, freshman Will Ramon continued his strong
spring season and led SU with a 76. He was third
individually after the opening round. Junior
Kyle Grona and freshman Jared Cornish both shot 81's as SU
shot a team score of 321.
In the afternoon session, it was Grona's turn to take the
lead as he shot the 76 - which also was the third best score
of the round. Ramon traded places and added an 81 to
his opening round score. Cornish shot 84 as the team
struggled to a 327. Through both rounds, the
Mountaineers remained in second behind host LeTourneau.
The final round was delay 90 minutes due to a frost delay,
but the conditions were better once play started than the
first day. Cornish made the most of the improved
scoring conditions and rode a hot short game while adding
his own 76. That score tied for the second best round
of the day. Grona came in with a 78 and sophomore Jay
Chapman added an 80 as Schreiner shot a 317 overall.
Individually, Grona was SU's top finisher at 235 for 6th
place. Ramon finished 7th and Cornish was 12th.
Chapman came in 17th while freshman Mark Salazar was 23rd.
LeTourneau won the event while
Mississippi College finished third and Louisiana College
finished fourth. |
